It’ll be interesting to see if this ends up being a real indication that the NSA and similar organizations (FBI, CIA, etc) are pushing for a stop to back doors in the next generation of encryption standards coming out of NIST.
The NSA assuring me that there are no backdoors, if anything, makes me more suspicious that there are and that NSA is aware of them and intends to use them, so please everybody go use our cool new encryption schemes that we totally promise are safe
Who would you trust instead? Some random guy with a phd that you've never heard of? We're already using NSA recommended algorithms today that are getting weaker everyday. Unless you plan on living off the grid and transact in cash, you don't have much choice except to trust them.
It is tempting to be flippant and to say "well, if Snowden says it's safe too, I'll feel better"
But, realistically, we live in something pretty close to a zero-trust world, and that is especially true with government agencies, be they U.S. or otherwise, as governments around the world have stepped up quite heavily their assaults on their citizens.
