The TL;DR here is that Mark Pizzolato introduced an unpopular feature that silently turned disk images into containers. A few forks were started to remove this feature, resulting in Mark unilaterally changing the license to close the source.
Edit: Should clarify that Mark does NOT own the project, he owns only the GitHub presence, and has removed the ability of others to interfere in his takeover.
IIUC he is also the main developer. He has like 20x times the number of commits of the other contributors but only 2x the number of LOC of the other contributors.

Is the github repo just a mirror? Is it an old project migrated to github?
This is exemplary of the problem of open source, and human politics. And why people still mostly like working in authoritarian organisations where one person usually cannot do this (unless they are the autocract)
Honestly I do not understand the problem - I have read the thread and understand people are upset, but really summoning up the wisdom of Solomon to fix the politics here is beyond me, and probably most of us. I expect people will fork something. Democracy will mostly win out. SEO not withstanding.
It's my understanding this can't be fixed; I intended to warn people that the previously open-source repository is now closed-source and therefore dangerous.
Mark has sole control of the GitHub organization and won't listen to anyone else. That ship has sailed. There is no fixing anything, just trying to limit collateral damage.

This is why Linus cannot say nice things.
