Another related point is that "best" is often a matter a perspective and personal conditions. The right thing at the wrong time doesn't help, but the wrong thing at the right time might still be helpful. We also rarely ever find the best by what's popular or well-known. "Best at marketing" doesn't always correlate with other factors!
I was looking for the "best" parmesan cheese the other day. Apparently it is Kraft Grated Cheese.
Now admittedly I had not realised that outside Europe parmesan need not be sourced from it's local region, but still, the best placed parmesan reggiano came 11th. Even that looked past it in the photos.
So the delicious curls I grate onto my pasta may put me out of step with the best.
You're not searching the right sources. Find the sources that are actually related to real Parmesan cheese, and then search within them. Don't rely on SEO spam sites that want to feed you whatever garbage they're pushing.
Google and other well known sites are easily gamed. You got gamed.
Ah, sorry, thank you, I was fully aware of that. The point I was making was that "the best" is not just subjective, but actually distorted. As I said, I had no idea that Parmesan outside Europe is often not genuine so my search was in good faith and had I not done some research I would not have known. So that is one inadvertent source of distortion for me. The other is commercial as you say. And don't get me started on personal reviews ...
