Ask HN: Underground Vacation Destinations?

8 points by acuozzo ↗ HN
During 2007-8 I spent most of my sophomore year at Rutgers University in what students called "the catacombs" on Livingston campus: a large network of underground tunnels connecting the dormitories to one another and featuring underground study rooms, recreation rooms, etc.

Ever since then I've found myself drawn to structures like this. Does anyone know of a vacation destination like this?

I know this sounds crazy, but I'm not really looking for caves or natural underground structures.

I personally enjoy the underground NYC subway system, both in and out of the fare zones. Watch out for the mole people!
I would stay away from the 'Ton, though. Bad shit going down.
It's fascinating to get a feel for the structure and layout of the larger stations in the London Underground. I'd love to pick one and spend a week making a decent model of the passages and platforms.
a few in Canada due to the weather. Toronto has PATH, Montreal RESO and Halifax has its Link. Don't know if you could do an entire vacation underground there though (not that i'd want to - lots of other stuff to do in those towns)

Other than that the only one coming to mind is Coober Pedy - but thats caves - man made though...

I' not sure if it's included in your criteria, but what about Potosi? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Potos%C3%AD They have a huge mine system and you can visit some of them (and have a lot of nice old buildings in the surface).

[Remember that it's very high, so the Oxygen content is low and you must take it easy and avoid sports and dancing until you are use to the Oxygen level.]

Downtown Seattle used to be a whole level below street level. You can still tour the underground streets today.
Not exactly an ideal time to visit, but Odessa in Ukraine has an extensive series of catacombs.

I guess the Russians knew that both Mariupol and Odessa would be assaulted by Russians one day, better build a defensive installation underground in both cities.
