This is the essence of free speech and critical for the continuation of thoughtful discourse. Instead, we're at the mercy of cancel culture and toxic positivity. I can't wait until dissent and unpopular opinions are free to exist.

He was investigated in 2018, and already disciplined for his consensual relationship with that woman. To have that same investigation re-opened seems suspect.

No one comes out of this looking good. Relationships with people who are dependent on you are problematic, to put it mildly, but the university was looking out for itself and was after grant money, fame or both.
The faculty member has been dealt with adequately. Now it's time to look at the disciplinary committee closely. The "free speech" angle is just misdirection, which you'd expect from an alumni magazine.

Inserting your own opinions into link titles is very bad form. It's a dark pattern in social media where you try to force your opinions to others.
