It’s been a “shortage of skill” for more than a decade. Maybe we should refer to the shortage as one of industry initiative to train these people and stop blaming workers. There’s definitely no shortage of people interested in the field.
I've been interested in info sec since the 1988 Morris Worm. It's always paid better to be a Unix (and later. Linux) developer.

I think the decade-long skill shortage is a front for corporations not wanting to spend money on another type of employee. C-levels can understand spending money on themselves and their offspring, lawyers, janitors and faceless "workers". They don't understand a new type of worker, one that points out things that cost money to fix or implement, who, moreover, is not a lawyer or typically a relative.
