I'm fairly certain that HN forbids bots, it's not in the guidelines but I feel like I read that at some point or Dang said it. But I agree, a bot to do this would be nice. If I get into a paywalled article early enough that someone hasn't already done it I add a link but automated or built into the UI itself would be nice. Along side: `cached | flag | hide | past | favorite | X comments` it would be nice to have ` | archive ` or similar.
The headline is particularly suspicious - had any of these hypothetical women mentioned this to anyone it would have been an immediate scandal of mammoth proportions.
He's probably lying for attention. Or, charitably, the news is misinterpreting him on purpose for some reason. I don't feel like investigating to find out which.
I was in a meeting where a complaint was voiced that people being fired for sexual harassment often end up going to another tech company, there's no "this is why they're gone" signal, & ironically this often helps their career because in tech it's good to move companies every few years
I've stumbled across this person's YouTube videos before. For some reason, I always assumed he was a troll with how much he leans into "ex-Google tech lead".
It's really hard to tell; there was fairly earnest and genuine stuff mixed in with a lot of very dry humour. He always came off as kind of entitled, for sure, and at some point the 'jokes' started to come off as extremely poor taste. The trajectory of tech troll to weird financial/personal life advice to wife leaving him to full on reactionary along with his dealings with the AlgoExpert guy suggest there was always some level of seriousness and possibly mental illness in the mix.
I'm not sure, but the women who interviewed with this guy, if that part is true, would probably be able to sue Google for blatant sex-based discrimination. The DOJ might be able to as well (IANAL). I think all Google would be able to do is fire him, if he was currently still working there. Google doesn't enforce federal law, but they are responsible for themselves and their employees adhering to it.
That's correct. If Google knew that he was doing this and didn't prevent it, women who had him as an interviewer can gather and threaten Google with a lawsuit. Google would settle for $$$.
I'm not entirely convinced that there is nothing that could be done other than firing. There is a case to be made that he purposefully sabotaged the organization not unlike the damage caused by changing all the server passwords as a giant FU. If true, there are certainly damages. We just have an easier time with the tangibility of one vs the other.
This guy is a troll. He claimed he was fired from Facebook last week because of these tweets, when he was actually fired over a year ago and works full time on his "programming" YouTube channel (which has now turned into crypto scams and weird rants)
This guy is a chud valley-bro. His opinions are worth less than dog shit.
Anyone who builds their entire identity SOLELY around being a "tech lead" at a FAANG is a fucking pathetic loser and an absolute dumbass. Turns out, as anyone who isn't a total fucking idiot knows, expertise in one area doesn't mean expertise in all areas. If "techchud" wasn't so blinded by his own egregious and malignant stupidity he might be able to see that, but... he is. Misogyny or any form bigotry, or superiority-complex, is the surest sign your brain is operating below capacity. I just can't believe anyone ever listened to someone so demonstrably stupid, it's not even "NP hard" to ignore his ass.
> Shyu worked at Google as a tech lead on the YouTube app
> "Coding is a brutal 24/7 job, mutually exclusive with motherhood," Shyu said, saying that mothers would come back "obsolete and outdated" after maternity leave.
???
I mean the YouTube app is fine. But it's hard to believe that working on the _YouTube App_ of all things is a brutal 24/7 hour job which is so cutting edge that taking leave for a few months would make someone unable to work on it.
This isn't "a" tech lead. It is "the" one. And I was wondering why activists are not picking up on him, he was politically incorrect from the day one. Somehow I expected they will go after him sooner or later, probably after some misunderstood joke. It's not really my cup of tea but from what I watched he was always half-serious, or basically playing with the level of seriousness all the time.
No. You are wrong. You are clueless. And persisting in your belief is preventing talented women from working fulfilling jobs while also being happy people who choose to reproduce if they desire (this applies to men, too, who want to have children while working).
This is true but unfair, don't you think? It's basically forcing half of the population into making an extremely difficult life choice. And we all pay for this as the birth rate in Western countries diminishes year after year.
There are several ways of solving this issue, but I wouldn't count on companies implementing these on their own for variety of reasons.
It is what is what it is. Men have the biological advantage, but men also work all the dangerous jobs and live less than woman. That isn't fair either.
I'm calling BS on this guy. This never happened. It's some incel fantasy of his. If it had happened, there would have been a MASSIVE lawsuit and this would have been a front-page story on every major news outlet.
His channel was boring tech advice in the beginning. After his wife left him and took his kid back to Japan without notice, that's when the content started getting really misogynistic. Lots of MGTOW, red-pill stuff.

Also, if he did this, he should be fired out of a cannon. Into the sun.
Oh look, he got fired from Facebook for "misogyny".

And "allegedly". It seems there was some evidence this was fabricated
Dude is a massive attention-seeker, let's not give it to him
If it happened, Google's probably got a vested interest in it quietly going away.

Biology is a bitch and not fair, but no one ever said life was fair and that we can have everything we desire.
The guy's tweets said "I rejected all women on the spot".
That's not a choice.
