The "forgiving design" philosophy is clearly killing people and yet very little work is going in to reversing the damage. Residential roads should be as narrow as possible to naturally slow drivers down without relying on police enforcement. As well as visual cues of speed like trees lining the road + something tactile like cobblestone/brick surface.
I have noticed that some of the safest roads for a pedestrian are the dual lane roads with on lane parking causing several choke points. Despite the fact that as a pedestrian, you have to walk in the middle of the lane, all drivers are sharply aware of their surroundings to weave down the road at an appropriate pace.
This is how residential roads should be. Not a freeway with a sign requesting you treat it as a residential space.
Probably going to be too close to home for all the post industrial techno barbarian Americans on hn living in their car strewn wasteland cities. The pro car centrism I've experienced on this website is insane. It's maybe not individuals fault, but its more like the entire American system, which has deep health issues. Corporations lobbying their government to ruin their lives, roads, prisons etc. The vast lack of empathy, producing mentally ill school shooters. Cars are just another symptom.
