People in there remarked that it was not very effective, but from that NY Times article it either has improved, or works great for journalists who are somewhat publicly known?

I missed those, my bad. I didn't search correctly.
Every time I submit something I hit the "past" link to see if it's been submitted before, and if so, whether there had been any discussion.

In a sense, having been submitted before is validation, and maybe that's a good reason (if it was long enough ago) to submit it again anyway. The odd thing is when there are several submissions, and yet no discussion.
