That's from Sony Semiconductors/I&SS, not the Sony Camera division (part of EP&S), so take it with a (huge) grain of salt. It may just be internal politics, especially the claim that sensor sizes of phones will double (not happening unless you wanna quadruple the camera bump)
DSLRs are already being killed off by mirrorless cameras. Every notable camera company has already been doing this (especially Sony). [0]

So I’m curious why his would be true given the above situation already exists.

The prediction reported here includes mirrorless cameras. The headline is wrong; it should've said "DSLR-style" or "stand-alone."

The tech reasons cited don't make sense, because any of those advancements could be applied to stand-alone cameras for even greater impact. Well, with one exception: "AI" fakery, which involves computing power that cameras will probably not be imbued with.

I agree. To me, it’s like the old hot rod adage - “the only substitute for cubic inches is more cubic inches” - applies in camera sensors, bus replace cubic inches with “surface area”. Physics is tough to beat, and if the mirrorless cameras let us down on the computing power then phones will win. However, looking at the Nikon Z9, and extrapolating into the future, I don’t think they will.
It'd be a shame if full frame consumer cameras were to disappear from the market, the ai enhanced photography from smartphones just always feels fake to me. Yet I wouldn't be surprised if it were to happen, wouldn't be the first time the lowest common denominator becomes the benchmark standard for various reasons (ease of use, low cost access), happened to music with mp3.
More accurate to say the entire camera industry is folding in on itself such that entire types of cameras are disappearing. However, there will always be jobs for standalone cameras. Maybe not for consumers, but for the exploding class of content makers both large and small.
I dunno, the laws of physics are working against smartphones here. How much lens can you fit into a device that needs to be thin?
