Many of these wrecks are declared War Graves, not to be disturbed.

The value of scrap steel which pre-dates the nuclear age, shielded by water is very high: it can be used to make MRI/NMR and low-background radiation equipment.

In general, the scrap metal of all kinds now exceeds the cost of recovery for many shallow waters, and these gravesites are being robbed by locals (who have lost income from fish stock losses) and non-locals (who invested in boats to do this)

They not only destroy war graves, they release huge amounts of toxic sludge from sump oil, fuel bunkers, tanks, and associated waste.

It's a disaster. Good map btw.
