It’s quite clear where this is going. Apple wants to fully take over the in-car digital experience, with CarPlay not just being an app inside the OEMs own OS. Car makers would be well advised to see this as the power play that it is. Once CarPlay is central to the user experience, cars become even more interchangeable. What’s more, Apple fully controls (and can monetise) what digital apps and services passengers get to use. Funny how Apple even used the announcement to implicitly threaten OEMs: integrate CarPlay or have your cars turned down by cashed-up iPhone owners.
