If you use T-Mobile US (likely localized to them as a provider), it’s a pain to have an eSIM issued and setup on an iPhone (you have to first have a physical sim for the line to be “converted” to an eSIM). Anything that makes the management of these digital entitlements easier is welcomed.
That's not true? Maybe it is for T-Mobile, but I just bought an Orange eSim online and added it to my phone in about 2 minutes with a QR that was generated on the site.
Right, it absolutely depends on the operator. Some just aren't really very clued into it yet (or seem to deliberately exclude it, including a lot of pay as you go providers)
It's quite easy on AT&T and Verizon. I utilize AT&T's prepaid service as it's cheaper and I purchase second hand devices and at least on iOS it was pretty seamless. Keep in mind that AT&T prepaid has near zero lines of support.
I recently used the T-Mobile Prepaid eSIM app to setup an eSIM with a one-month pre-paid plan for a trip to the US on an iPhone and it was a surprisingly smooth process.
Maybe the post-paid plans are more convoluted due to legacy billing reasons?
