Possibilities abound: morbid obesity, Trump, global warming, Biden, Yellen, Putin, Erdogan, anyone else whose name ends in "en" sound, EVs, gas cars, flatulence (of SOs), reading HN before taking one's medications, ditto for "DrudgeReport", etc., etc.

Hell, it's practically a legal requirement to blame global warming or Trump for all societal ills these days.

This reminds me of World War Z by Max Brooks. One of the storylines in that book was about a director who found himself making propaganda films to boost morale because he was sick of seeing people become so demoralized and hopeless that they'd lay down, go to sleep, and never wake up again.
