Most efficient in terms of least THC destroyed? The advancing combustion zone of smoking creates a plume of heated air that boils the THC away from the plant residue(which = the fuel). The actives boil at 157C and some escapes into the air, and is inhaled, and some is consumed in combustion. Hard to nail down those losses, but the inhaled THC is highly bio available = fast hit. The other path is via the digestive tract, which is a very gradual hit - not really a hit compared to the smoke path, but some like it and it probably is less destructive to the THC as even THC metabolites are bio active. The third method is solvent extraction and the use of a vaping apparatus. Good solvents extract it all, but can not be breathed safely, so the solvent needs to be evaporated and the THC extract dissolved in a bio-tolerable solvent. Vape makers sell these - try a few and see if you like one or other of the many as some have added scents and some have been implicated in lung damage in heavy users. Vaping offers the lowest level of destruction of the THC, coupled with a rapid bio-availability of the vaped THC = the most efficient IMHO.

There is a difference not only in onset, but also duration when comparing smoked versus ingested THC. THC9 is converted to THC11 when processed by the liver. One of the notable differences between 9 and 11 is that the effects are considerably longer lasting. It is lacking the "peak" that people who toke enjoy most, though.

The effect takes longer to begin, but it stays active in your system a lot longer. Instead of smoking repeatedly through the evening, you can ingest once and you're pretty good for the next 4 or 5 hours, or more depending on how much you take. That's pretty efficient.

Anecdotally, if I smoke before bed, I wake up completely sober. But if I ingest (via capsules, but of course tea, or brownies, etc. would all work) before bed, I'm still high when I wake up. If you use cannabis for sleep issues, it seems ingesting it is about as efficient as you could hope it to be.

My recipe for getting baked and staying baked without having to "top it up": Take a couple of THC capsules, and then smoke up. That way you can spend the hour or so enjoying the smoked herb peak before the ingested THC starts taking effect. While the smoked cannabis is waning, the pills are starting to kick in. It's nearly seamless.
