Big-company CEOs (and venture-funded startup CEOs are mostly big-corp wannabes) rarely produce good ideas. They're champion shifters of blame and takers of credit. When the company hits a rough patch, their first instinct is to fire people, because it looks like they're fixing the problem when in fact they're usually keeping the same level of operational complexity, but short-staffing, which makes things worse in the long run.
When we permanently tie someone to their history, we force them to stay the same person forever, and back them into a corner. It makes rehabilitation impossible.
Look at cancel culture - but in its original sense. A company would do something bad, they would get boycotted, and then when they reversed that decision, they would be forgiven and applauded for doing the right thing.
Now, when the mob never forgives and never forgets, companies are incentivised to double-down on that misstep, and fully align themselves with fringe groups instead. Like someone getting radicalised in prison, leaving with no job prospects, and resorting to joining a gang because it's the only option left.
I worry that this will do the same thing to people. Hell, even criminal records can be sealed after long enough.
This, precisely. That said, I think we're far too forgiving of companies that do bad stuff and far too unforgiving of people. Companies have huge PR (propaganda) teams. Individuals don't, especially not individuals who've been dragged through the mud.
