How is it possible to pronounce GNU given Stallman's own instructions? (gnu.org)

From http://www.gnu.org/: 'The name “GNU” is a recursive acronym for “GNU's Not Unix!”; it is pronounced g-noo, as one syllable with no vowel sound between the g and the n.' How is this possible? Doesn't a hard g imply a vowel sound?
