Katelyn Jetelina, at your local epidemiologist did a great job of explaining it a few days before[0]. This is Simpson's paradox in action and is an interesting read.

She adjusts for age, but why not also obesity, which is known to make COVID worse [1]? Eyeballing it, differences in obesity rates [2] seem like a perfect match for the differences in death rate she reports. Her analysis is just another instance of "apply statistics until you get white privilege, then immediately stop"
