He didn’t do as he was told by doctors. That would entail things like not taking medications some days, or taking at the wrong time, or drinking alcohol/doing drugs etc which interacted with his medication. It more broadly, just doing anything which doctors said not to do.
In most medical areas these are really important things for outcomes. You can do the best medicine possible and give the perfect treatment, but it means jackshit if the patient doesn’t take the medication.
