My question is, given that landfills release a lot of methane (which is a much more potent greenhouse gas than if your burned the methane, used it to generate electricity, and then just released the equivalent CO2), are these landfills also trying to capture the energy from methane and therefore avoid the more potent warming effects from just letting it seep out?
UKGOV/EU looked into it a while back[1] but that summary makes it sound like it's more useful in a "mitigate climate change" scenario than actual electricity generation.
