All for a paltry $1.37 million USD? Why? Doesn't this severely undermine every potential "good" use-case originally promised by crypto? (Anonymous or at least semi-private)
I imagine ICE promised that they (and a bunch of other federal agencies) would crawl really far up their butt if they didn't accept that generous gift of money in exchange for the data access.
A ritual burning of the 4th amendment might've happened right after.
It may be parochialism on my part, but as a Canadian, the first thing that comes to mind when hearing such a suggestion, is that it would likely result in us basically militarizing our border with the United States. It would impede trade and make it a hassle to visit and I'm not sure that would be in the interest of either country.
I don't think many LatinX people would be intrested in going to Canada to begin with. Because of Canadian weather. And this is not about Canada. This is about justice for LatinX people and US doing the right thing.
More than 50 LatinX migrants died in a truck this week [1]. The dead people and their families deserve justice. No wonder Democrats are losing LatinX votes.
A United States without border control would mean that anyone in the world could fly into the USA. And then walk over the border into Canada, and claim asylum. Or simply live here illegally. Whatever the weather, we have better social welfare programs, including for those under removal orders and without status, than the United States.
Some would be Mexican, or Central/South American, but at the moment, the #1 country of origin for this practice is actually Nigeria.
The large majority of these claimants are ultimately denied asylum and deported as they are not considered refugees under Canadian law, but it's an increasingly common phenomenon. They get a year or two residency in Canada, and a long shot at possibly being accepted. At the moment they are entitled to a full asylum hearing and social assistance while their cases are heard. We could not maintain that if it becomes hundreds of thousands, or millions, per year.
Perhaps ironically, I imagine that Mexico would have the same objection, for the same reasons. Mexico would also be a living standard upgrade for about 2/3rds of the world's population.
