I agree that this is a rather dystopian idea.

Just when our smartphones need to become a device for our wellbeing, they are going to shovel even more ads through our face.

I'd be happy to pay for a crapware free smartphone, even if that meant a lot of more money.

Google Fi has been really good, no extra apps that cannot be uninstalled (beyond a few Google ones, but nothing extra over what you likely already have). You also get to be on the newer androids, other vendors have always lagged behind and added their own bloatware

I remember when I had to have the Amazon & NFL apps 5+ years ago...
