It's the "hero" vs "villain" dichotomy.

What are the characteristics of the "hero" and of the "villain"?

Are there any patterns seen across different stories, e.g. Ebenezer Scrooge from "A Christmas Carol", Phil Connors from "Groundhog Day" as the "villain Grinches" vs. SpongeBob, Ferris Bueller, Pee-Wee Herman as the "happy warrior heroes" or the "capably glad" vs the "socially mad"?
