This is interesting academic paper, which does not have current let alone foreseeable future overlap with reality of our space capabilities as well as economic ones.
As much as all of us space-nerds want to see our childhood visions of humanity as space-conquering come true, I must side with Tom Murphy (Do the Math blog) sentiment that such enthusiasm is misplaced and essentially an "escapism entertainment" (from real world problems).
