I guess VPNs are banned as well?
Well, Cloudflare certainly is. I'm not sure about most VPNs though I'd assume that the government is keeping them off the registry so no one can bypass the censorship, like most of us have.
But why? What’s the initiative for this? Can any folk in Indonesian or familiar with the matter explain a lil bit?
Well, it said that the sites had to register and any site not registered in the database had to be blocked by the ISPs. So, if TikTok, for example, was registered, and then next month the government decides they don’t like TikTok anymore, they can remove it from the database and poof, it is gone for anyone that uses an Indonesian ISP. At least, that’s what I picked up from reading the article.

What does this mean for the hordes of remote workers / digital nomads I wonder?
> Remember folks, arbitrary censorship is a clear violation of human rights!

There are a lot of "human rights activists" who strongly disagree.

Arbitrary censorship is ok as long as i do it. When somebody else is doing it is not ok. We live in a world of double standards and this is not good.

Entirely fine and not even censorship when it is private companies doing it. They are free to silence whomever they want...
As long as those private companies don't have any financial arrangements with government whether through usage contracts, grants etc. or legislation that would compromise their "private" decision making.

Now applying that filter, the censorship landscape looks very different doesn't it? Government using private companies to censor, is still censorship. Governments lean on private companies with carrots (financial grants and usage contracts) or sticks (legislation), and when that happens you can no longer consider those decisions to be free of government interference.

The American left seems particularly fond of censoring those who they deem are "problematic" and have bad thoughts.
Yes, their book burnings, armed mobs and attempts to gerrymander political structures so only they and their supporters get to participate in democratic processes is... wait...
they literally pushed to purge so many russian stuff and to screw russian citizens on the internet a few months ago.

they can't get mad on this issue because if they can force this on other nations then nations can decide to do it to themselves.
