Sort of ironic to see this blog post via a forum link but obviously get and agree with the point. To me content creation is a spectrum (trying to become an influencer is different than having a syndicated column or similar) that only really applies to the online space but don’t hate the player hate the game I guess.
Yeah the irony is not lost on me but I do come to hacker news for curated content via upvotes. That’s not what I want out of social media websites. Maybe I’m in the minority
The problem is that we all want something a little different and they deploy algorithms that average out our individuality. The real breakthrough will be when someone makes a true digital assistant that filter and scores the internet on our behalf, for our actual betterment. Where well being is the primary optimization. I might also guess that our assistants will be physical before they are intellectual.
Never understood why there’s not a “filter/algorithm” selection in Settings or something to allow a User to specify “news/social/business/whatever” Maybe makes sense as a dark pattern to give a User more than they want always
Google Ads has this for you, so you can control your ad preferences and blocks, as a user

I wish twitter would understand that I'm not interested in family, pet, food, or vacation photos.

I suspect if these platforms did better for us, we would spend less time there, and their profits would decline. Hence, they are not incentivized to do so because they are ad based rather than subscription based.
