HOWTOs are text-based information-dense documentation pages that were very common through the 90s in the early internet. I am sure a lot of people that were working with computers around that time benefited from a couple of these detailed documentation projects.
I kind of miss the detail and effort put to that kind of documentation. Nowadays most "documentation" or "tutorials" you find in the internet are low effort SEO/advertising disguised as documentation.
HOWTOs are from a different era where there was no continuous effort to "monetize" the internet.
