How do you figure that? 8 hours a day * 5 days a week * 50 weeks a year = 2000 hours per year; over a 40-year working life that's 80K hours. Seems like a completely normal pace.
Ok, so maybe it's 80k hours across a 45 year career, then. What difference does that make? 80k is still a reasonable approximation for the total time one has available for one's career. Of course people's individual circumstances will vary, but that's not the point.
