Ask HN: Tutoring for SRE/DevOps?

3 points by aliasxneo ↗ HN
I'm a self-taught learner who has been studying software engineering and systems administration for a few years now. I'd love to grow deeper in a one-on-one tutoring style, but this seems to be a limited market despite its proven effectiveness.

Does anyone know or have used a service to find tutors in these fields?

kinda hard cuz you need a distributed system to work on

better approach might be to build your own project/mini-startup, then hire a little consulting whenever you hit a pain point

Cheaper way to learn would be to do a little consulting for other people's mini-startups and figure it out on their dime.
Apply at startups until someone is desperate enough to hire you. Break as little as possible as you learn. Bounce as soon as you’ve reached a point where you’re no longer learning.

There is no better teacher than experience. You can experiment in a homelab extensively, but it’ll never replace experience in a live distributed systems environment.

I cannot stress that tests and peer review are crucial for high availability delivery. Use checklists, ask for feedback, it’s cheaper than outages.
