After Blender got it's long-overdue facelift with the 2.8 update, I think it far surpasses the capability and value of every other 3D software on the market. The learning curve is steep, but the return-on-investment for learning it's interlocking tools & systems is pretty significant.
Obviously there's the parable of Linux slaying the proprietary Unix fiends too, but I'd reckon most people on this site are well-familiarized with that story already.
I would say it's more about how much diverse use and feedback gets incorporated in the development impacts more than being open source or not. Programming language/compilers is a good example but one that doesn't get enough use won't get refined. Weather initily developed open/closed it's how much was taken into consideration in which use cases matters most.
