It was never simple. I remember having to use CPanel, connect via FTP, and drag files in.

It was harder then.

I'd argue simple web hosting still does exist. For my personal site I simply run a $5 Linux box on DigitalOcean, and SCP the files I want to host to it inside the /var/www directory. That's simplicity, no clunky CPanel interfaces or anything, just SCP.
