Why is my Twitter account in a superposition state?

Trying to use an account I created a long time ago. Logging in with the old password fails. Attempts to reset the password using my email produce "Sorry we could not find your account". Meanwhile an attempt to create a new account with my email produces "Email has already been taken".

Did you use a subaddress (user+sub@email.com) when you registered? Though I can't find whether twitter supports this or not.

Ive encountered websites that don't handle sub address well, sometimes ignoring the extension, other times not

No, I have never used sub addresses ever.

I have the same issue. Frustrating stuff.
Hmm. LinkedIn says nobody in my network is currently at Twitter. SOL it seems.

Does Twitter have some sort of dormant account mechanism? By the looks of it, this might be the case. Although locking you out just because you don't login regularly is unfair.
This in some ways makes sense, re-using emails already assigned to defunct accounts could be used nefariously possibly?
Unrelated, but it reminds me of 20+ years ago, I ended up with two Amazon accounts with the same email and two different passwords. The order histories were different. I emailed them, and they merged the smaller history into the bigger history. I have always wondered what kind of lousy schema allowed that to happen.
