A direct empirical proof of the existence of dark matter (arxiv.org)

Oh, man, as a non-astrophysicist, I would love for someone like Dr. Becky Smethurst to explain this in layman's terms. (Obviously I understand the importance of the conclusion, but I don't understand the evidence that leads to it.)
