I've generally noticed this too, that as part of efforts to allegedly promote relevant content, a lot of searches I do just result in a very constrained set of results.
Not to say having a bajillion results 15 years ago was loads better, I remember it all being fairly junky, although I did have more time and patience to peruse them..
