Apple got away with this feature in Mac OS X onwards. But I'm guessing Apple wasn't as concerned about gov't contracts as Microsoft would be.

The current macOS timezone selector doesn't highlight regions, so they may have bowed to pressure at some point.

I remember the timezone map when I installed MacOS back in the days of Snow Leopard would always hit the wrong one.

Trying to select 'London' would always register as one of the many cities in neighbouring counties: Paris, Dublin, Lisbon.

I wonder if it's a similar reason Microsoft Windows doesn't support emoji flags.

Although Taiwan having a flag shouldn't be controversial when Hong Kong and Jersey also have flags.

I think a trick might be to:

- Go with geographic rather than political regions where possible

- For political regions, have an alternative motive (e.g. traditional versus simplified characters for Taiwan versus Mainland China), and expressing that in a non-political way. Potentially, add a disclaimer.
