Reminded me a bit of the Ex Machina graphic novel series where the dimension hopping cyborg is scanning the internet for information and remarks that at least the have Wikipedia in this reality.
There's a related "What if Netscape went with Scheme as it's scripting language?"
May be a good example of "worse is better"? The costs of fixing the initial shortcomings are staggering, but it is seen as the price of doing business.
