The resentment on HN is repulsive

Why did this place go from optimism and constructive criticism to dumb hate for successful people?

I think there's been a transition in its userbase from "aspiring founder/hacker" to "disgruntled employee" in the past 5 years.

Arguably it's been less cynical over time. HN memes existed for a reason around 2013.

I agree. And the disdain towards a new way of doing things (especially in web development, serverless for instance) is impeccable.

No one is forcing anyone to use these new ways.

Success is no longer seen as good or desirable or even morally-acceptable in modern American society (or really modern Western society generally).

It's not that weird that this change has affected HN too, since most of the user base is American.

Can you please not? Even if you're right, the only way to respond that doesn't contribute to exactly the problem you're talking about is to respectfully provide correct information and better arguments. Fulminating at the decline of the internet (or this corner of it) just adds to it.

Spicy! When I started reading HN 4-ish years ago, I was intimidated by how much everyone seemed to know, and how serious the tone was. I still see people with incredible insights, but now they're more like bright spots in a pedantic brine. Did the site change? Am I trying to wring the last drops of value out of a meal no longer meant for me?

Either way, I still appreciate the information-centric culture, better than all the jokes on reddit.
