The Doom community is very active, plenty of ports, maps and mods are being made. It's an art medium at this point, it won't ever go away completely, just like oil paintings are still a thing.
My favorite Doom mod is Beautiful Doom, which tactfully modernizes the sprites, animations and weapons. As far as I'm concerned it's modern weapons option is the definitive way to play with a mouse. They got it just right, it's perfect.
