and among us mere mortals of the tech world elite that aren’t at a big boi: i haven’t had a review since 2019, which means i haven’t had a raise or any bonuses either.

you have direct control over that.
Sounds like it would be a good idea to interview elsewhere.

I'm a mortal myself and I interview with many companies and had plenty offers.

Unless there’s something else really compelling about the job, it seems like the last year-and-a-half would have been a good time to take some initiative and find your own raise.

You might consider that management and / or hr see you as a mark.

Why is this considered suitable material for The New York Times? If e.g. PricewaterhouseCoopers told their auditors they were only getting half their annual bonus because of the slowing economy, nobody outside maybe a trade publication would care.

The creepy obsession that the mainstream media has with the inner workings of tech companies is bizarre.

NYT runs this content because leaks about the inner-workings of elite institutions get clicks.

In this case it incites resentment in folks who don't get fat annual bonuses and RSUs because they don't work for a FAANG, making the BigCo employees appear like over-privileged whiners.

If PwC was in the midst of a contentious legal battle over an acquisition by a famous CEO-turned-troll-turned-caricature and was also famous for their high pay, then it would be. You know this.
I live in SV and have friends in NYC. The sense we get is that NYers, and especially those in NY media, take some joy in negative news about SV. It could be because Wall Street (and NY law/consulting/ad firms) used to be the most-coveted jobs for high-performing young people, and then SV rose up as an uber-desirable career destination.
Of course we do (real people, not the media). Not defending snobbery or anything but SV costs NYC rent for someplace that's.. definitely not NYC.

Lame-os who are primarily interested in the most-coveted jobs might be motivated by what you're saying but there's a lot more to NYC than that.

Interesting point about rents — perhaps NYers should be celebrating SV's success because it pulls away some of the high-earners who would have driven up NYC rents even further?
Perhaps, I don't know, my biases and schadenfreude aren't that sophisticated.
CEO Agrawal's base salary is $1 million, with a 150% target bonus, plus $12.5 million in RSUs over 4 years. Not that C-suites have to save face these days.
That is surprisingly low for a "big tech" CEO.
So is Twitter revenue.

This is why you should ignore recruiters when they try to include a “guaranteed” bonus in the total compensation figure they give you. It’s never guaranteed.
Absolutely. A guaranteed bonus is called "salary."
