Ask HN: Package service to keep software substrate healthy and up to date
after years of work in big tech orgs I gained quite a bit of experience in understanding the software environment where software is deployed and complied in.
I like to call all the set of libraries, environment options, setting to compilers or to interpret, software substrate. As it is not the main value but it is fundamental to have an healthy substrate to not incur in software defects.
I am the one that can update to the latest library, upgrade the compiler, fix the warnings, deploy the last version of the interpreter, etc... I take care of this software substrate.
All operations that are necessary but requires a lot of time and knowledge to get right.
I am thinking about packaging this experience as a product for medium to large companies.
Ideally I would like to partner with companies that need a stable software foundation and be responsible to deliver the set of tools, libraries, executable, environmental variables, etc... that are needed to succefully develop and deploy software.
This will concretise in partnering with the client to understand their codebase. Create a stable software image with all the libraries and tools needed to deploy successfully the software. And keep such base image up to date, by running integration tests using new release of the tools that are needed in the base image.
Pointing out what issues the team will encounter in a migration and suggesting the best way forward.
Would this kind of service be of any value?
