I've always found scaling interesting. Mostly because I've never implemented such a system. The scaling issue also seemed to affect Parler too where their computational needs were far out of wack compared to their MUA.
What do you think is the cheapest way you could serve 3 visits/second?
Obviously a $5 VPS could do "Hello, world!" or some light JSON at 3 visits per second, right?
What are they serving? Streaming video? Megabytes of scripts/styles/fonts/images?
Ah, it's for Truth social. aka 1 visit is most likely not 1 request. It's most like... 10-15, with logic to generate a timeline, plus authorization checks, plus database, plus cache
The cheapest way would likely be something like a WordPress.com or Tumblr site, where you can piggyback on someone's global-scale infrastructure. You could do that for like the $10/yr it costs to map a domain, but it's obviously somewhat restrictive.
So the source is a 'screenshot' posted by Tech Dirt about an undesirable Trump-related entity and it is immediately true and anything else such as (privacy, surveillance, free-software, big tech, etc) is speculative nonsense?
I thought Tech Dirt was a rumour mill and an 'unreputable' source here and in general. So now this time it is reputable?
I've read TD for years and always thought that they were quite reputable. They (and Masnick in particular) have better legal analysis of IP cases than I've found almost anywhere else.
Of course, it's a very opinionated site, but I don't recall ever seeing 'nonsense' on the site. Maybe I'm missing it?
The industry attracts people interested in the money they can make, they fake their knowledge and capabilities, and they don't understand what they are doing, because they don't care about the tech, they are here for the juicy pay
That's why our society needs to get rid of money and wealth asap, otherwise we'll be stuck on this dying planet eating each other's remains
The same way that you have contempt for people who "don't care about the tech", a lot more people, me included, have contempt for those who "only care the tech".
This is because "the tech" is just a tool. To me what matters is what problem you're solving. What you're saying effectively is that your don't care about solving problems, you just like playing with the tools you're familiar with.
Fortunately people like me are winning (in the sense that we're being able to shape society a lot more effectively than those who want to "get rid of money")
Unfortunately 'solving problems' often really means accumulating easy money. Every strategy is acceptable, like faking and manipulating.
In our current (primitive) system, this way of life may lead to what's called success in this system.
I deeply doubt, that it can lead to a fulfilling life, which you may realize only when it's too late. I have witnessed this late realization multiple times and it's tragic.
How do you build systems to solve problems while creating guardrails against unjust enrichment? Success should be rewarded, but not too much, and both what is success and how much rewarding is what’s up for debate.
Of course. But there are so many forms of reward, besides money.
Understanding some technology or scientific concept can be a lot more rewarding than getting or holding money imo. Helping people, solving problems or just a conversation can, too.
> what is success and how much rewarding is what’s up for debate
Fortunately everyone can define these on their own.
> How do you build systems to solve problems while creating guardrails against unjust enrichment?
We’ll see how much people like you are “winning” when this planet is a molten wasteland once the gravy train runs out.
People that care about tech built the very device you are using to communicate at light speed, not people who care about money. You can care about tech and also solve problems. Money and wealth impede this pursuit.
The problem is, people who care about tech and solving problems don’t assassinate leaders when they become a threat to money and property, whereas people like you do. Because it threatens your profits.
On this world, you reap what you sow. I wish the direction was different but with the direction we are all headed thanks to greed, your children or children’s children will be boiling alive — all because you’re “winning” and “guiding civilization”. Right off a cliff.
Removing money is removing an impediment to a post-scarcity society. Money artificially generates scarcity in post-scarcity. It also embeds society to be unchanging in service of those with money (who, after a certain threshold of wealth, never ever run out of it by making capital “work” for them generationally). It creates a class of people who get to fail upwards. “Poor guy’s company failed. Let’s throw him a $2m salary and get him back on his feet”.
Some of the most incompetent people get rewarded for who they know, instead of what they know and what true value they bring. That is what money has devolved into. This results in anyone with true value having little to no motivation or interest in “solving problems”. Why solve problems when people who haven’t had a fraction of your struggle will exploit all your value for themselves? Will make the world a worse place for everyone else but themselves and who they know? Who will sell out all of humanity to make their own lives better?
The amount of inefficiency and suffering money brings is incalculable. Anyone who has spent some time talking with real people can clearly see this. Only people with spoons up their asses in an insulated, fake micro-society could possibly think otherwise.
All of us should be working to make it so people like you don’t matter. Total automation up and down the stack of resource acquisition, processing, and distribution — owned by noone (and everyone). Automated satiation of every conscious beings needs and wants irrespective of their origins. Maximization of health, quality of life, quality of experience, and a place for everyone. This and so much more is what money denies us all. And it cannot come about as long as their is asymmetrical ownership, because the people who can build it have no real incentive to. Why automate yourself out of a job? Why automate your fellow man out of having a home, food, healthcare? Anyone with a conscious withholds total automation under this mechanism of society.
I for the life of me cannot comprehend how anyone can look at their fellow man, with the same evolutionary brains, and be okay with their impoverished suffering. Can live in opulence via exploitation and turning a blind eye. I pity the people who can live that way. You are very, very stuck in a spiritual prison, and it will take a long time to liberate you from it.
*note: I realize I misused at least one “their” and have some other grammar issues — I write from my phone while hiking so I hope anyone in the future reading this will forgive the errors and absorb the spirit of what I’m communicating.
I just want to live in a better world. I want to level up. Leveling up demands taking the whole planet with. Things can be so much better than they are for everyone. That is where everything I say and do comes from now. I don’t care about dying if it means compromising that objective to live. Sometimes, when I see people lost and taking so many others with them, it just makes my blood boil. Everything could be so much better.

[ 3.5 ms ] story [ 69.5 ms ] threadNot bad, but also $320k for 3vps is awful.
This reminds me of an excellent book on queueing theory for software engineers:
Performance Modeling and Design of Computer Systems: Queueing Theory In Action

That's a tricky one.

This is a meaningless statement, not even wrong.
