I don't understand in what Universe Peloton was ever supposed to be anything but the punchline to a joke.

Like if you explained to me 5 years ago that people would spend the price of a decently high end road bike + a subscription fee, to get a stationary bike with an ipad attached to it, I would have bet my life savings that there was no market for that. Apparently I'm clueless and these suckers exist.

We as a modern society have to be the most smug of all. Think about every predator in the world. We constantly pay to exercise, to burn off EXTRA calories, where as every other animal on the planet conserves them or expends a vast amount to obtain more.

Think about this. We order water and vegetables to be sent to us via the mail.

We are the only species that makes a conscious effort to negate our chances of survival.

That and we can choose diets (paleo, vegan, keto, etc...) and have choices to refuse to eat things due to all our abundance.

We’ve defined intermediate fasting into a lifestyle choice, where in other parts of the world it is called hunger, poverty and lack of food.

It does sound silly, but if we were to audit our lives we might find probably our own Pelotonic traps somewhere else.

Reminds me of that webcomic with the cubicle dweller laughing at animals falling for simple traps.

That iPad has enough content, gamification, and social aspects that it keeps you motivated to work out on a consistent basis. For many people that effect (especially if it leads to health benefits) is worth paying a lot of money for, and it's easier to just spend the money than to try (and likely fail) to be self-motivated enough to do the same thing on a conventional stationary bike without the tricks.

In other words, better to pay ~$1500 + ~$44/mo on something that gets you working out hard every day, than to pay $150 for a big ugly clothes hanger.

I think one of the big advantages to something like peloton is how brief you can make it and how private it is. For some, it’s a more comfortable, realistic way to be eased into exercise. The gamification etc as you mentioned adds a lot to that too.
