Sometimes I think that this amputation could also be the result of a punishment. Pardon my dark fantasy. ;)

Why not a weapon injury? Because they didn't have sharp swords etc 31000 years ago? Well, we're to believe they had sharp surgical instruments...

This doesn't add up.
