The tone of the article and the headline are heartening. 20 years ago, it would have been "GWC partners with government contractor" and it would not have been news at all.
This will go away quickly. The military industrial <=> educational <=> governmental <=> media power structure agrees with GWC and won’t propagate significant criticism of such programs.

This is going to have a name soon - rainbow dystopia? Authoritarianism with Gen Z characteristics?

Hot take but I’m not sure this is a bad development.

The thing is that they've never been independant, but talking about them as if they were lets you link bad stuff to things you don't like in the culture.

Communism used 'comrade' to abolish aristocrat forms of address, some monarchies used their power to abolish slavery, anti-semitic Nazi Germany went to war with segregated America, and so on.

No one expected the state apparatus of those times and places to be way out of tune with their culture, but if you hated monarchy and liked slavery then you could link the two to score points, "abolitionist hereditary dictatorship? What a bunch of hypocrits" and you'd kind of be right, for the wrong reasons.

Somewhere in Boswell's Life of Johnson he quotes Johnson as asking, in reference to the American colonies, "Why do we always here the loudest cries for liberty from the drivers of slaves?"
