That's very kind of you. I've noticed that people are more likely to post thankyous, compliments, and other nice things when I've been complaining. Bit of a...dangerous incentive!
You can complain all you want, Dan, we will listen. Seriously, this is the only site I go to so you’re my favorite admin anywhere for keeping it well maintained.
on another topic - do you find that the people you ban actually do email to contest it or do the majority just make a new account and start the same ol' shit all over again?
It's a split. Some do the one, some the other, and some I don't know what they do.
It’s because it’s what makes us aware we’ve not been thankful enough.

I realize that doesn’t make sense, since you can still be frustrated even if people are thankful, but…

Political events appear to be a harsh period for moderation. It's probably a good time for a hug.
Out of curiosity, how many hours do you do moderation? Are you the only mod? Is this the only job? What happens if you are going on vacation or something? Don’t answer if it’s confidential obviously. Just curious about the behind the scenes.
I'm not the only mod but the only full time one these days. I never count hours. I don't go on vacation, but do get away—I just work on HN while doing so.
There is no HN without dang! You're so right, dang is the glue that binds the community and stops it going down the whirlpool of ... crap that so many other communities eventually spin towards!
I'm glad he got rid of the black mourning line. It had gotten really cringey when you thought someone's passing deserved but didn't get it.
Sorry to disappoint, but we haven't. It's true that it's divisive and I hate that; I hate lots of things about it; but it's an earnest tradition and I don't believe we should drop something like that just because it would be easier. That feels like succumbing to pressure and I don't think succumbing is a good strategy. (Not that anyone's intentionally pressuring us, it just adds up to that effect).

I know I've posted comments about this in the past but I don't know how to find them.
