This seems like a great feature which will definitely get better over time.

However there’s no way I would rely on only this until there is a history of successful usage and/or search and rescue teams validate it in the wild.

I wouldn’t want a “you’re holding it wrong” to happen in an emergency situation.

And/or some random bug drains your battery. Or you just drop it.
Or some random bug doesn't let you use the feature because Microsoft Teams is installed on your phone.
That’s something I’d worry about on a Google platform, not so much iOS.
Maybe Apple hasn't proven it on iPhones, but these sorts of satellite SOS devices are pretty common. Modern ones can bluetooth to your phone to let you text over satellite.

Sounds like a good marketing opportunity: film the ordeals of average people who are dropped into remote areas with nothing but an iPhone 14™®.

That was the iPhone 4 in 2010 - 22 years ago. Perhaps you can put that comment away now?
I picked up an inreach mini a few years back for emergencies while backpacking. I’m gonna get rid of it and use Apple SOS instead. Family being able to track my location and being able to contact emergency services is good enough for me. I kinda like the idea of going back to not being able to contact or be contacted while hiking but retaining an option for emergency service if something extreme like a broken bone or snake bite occurs.
