Try not to take voting too personally. Most of the time I find a downvote to simply be someone who feels strongly and disagrees with you. It is the nature of this kind of internet voting system.

If you find contributions as being flagged, you might want to think about how at its core, hacker news differentiates itself from say reddit.

Until you build up rep, you might also want to shy away from lightning rod issues such as anything remotely political or opinionated.
