Except this famed bicycle-based infrastructure is totally unusable for 8 months every year. Like every other Nordic city Helsinki spreads 100 tons of sand, which prevents some pedestrian accidents does not facilitate bicycling. The sand just lies there most of the year, being slippery on its own on dry asphalt.

Only Oulu does it right - they scrape the ice surfaces rough - they are bicycle-friendly, smooth and non-slippery.
