AskHN: How to help newly visually impaired colleague?
She's late/mid-career in a leadership research role and currently works very visually. I've advised she reopen a dialog with HR and our VP of Research to protect her position and projects, but she needs to show progress to stay where she is. Passion drives her, and she's been overexerting to keep all of the plates spinning instead of handing them off, mostly as proof to herself. I know she has more support than she realizes, but she's only recently acknowledged it might time to embrace her new capacities.
Formerly seeing people, how did you navigate vision loss? I'm interested in everything, personal and professional. How did you adjust to your new identity, what assistive technologies and workflows worked for you, what accommodations did you get at work, what was your experience with insurance options? Is there anything you wish you had done while you could have seen?
We have budgets for ADA and reasonable accommodation. She's a wife and mother caring for an ailing parent. Thanks for your thoughts.
