Ask HN: Best places to hang out on the net?

26 points by soulofmischief ↗ HN
Lately I feel like more and more trends happen without me knowing about it. I'm just not built for Tiktok and this unidirectional trend of consumption from which the internet was supposed to free us.

Discussion on the internet is becoming more fragmented again (a good thing), but our search tools no longer effectively uncover this discussion. For now, I rely on a network of people as my "search engine", using communities as a way to understand and stay on top of trends in various interests of mine.

What are some cool places on the internet where you like to hang out and learn/share new things?

IRC is fun, if you're patient and want a more "bantz"-oriented social experience.
I used IRC heavily back in the day, but have stopped visiting all my old haunts... most became too inactive or moved to Discord. Any servers you recommend?
The current Freenode replacement (Libera) is pretty active and nice. IRC still isn't perfect, but it's a nice salve for the immediacy of TikTok/Instagram/Twitter.
I'm on some nichey subreddits

Here

A couple Discords (most channels muted, fwiw)

A couple Slacks (again, most channels muted/unjoined)

Any public discords you'd recommend which the community here might enjoy?
The only good public Discord server I ever found was "Together C & C++", about those programming languages with very positive senior members and good moderation.

I am not exaggerating when I say every other public server I've ever joined has been filled with Nazis. Literally dudes posting racist memes and actual NSDAP flags on the wall in the selfies channel.

Avoid Discord, it's a garbage fire.

Don't know if they're ones folks here might enjoy...but I'm on one for a podcast about video games

And then a couple associated with subs (productivity and leathercraft) ...along with some notably more nichey and/or private ones :)

Discords I'm in that may (or may not) be of interest:

- PreppingDeals

- Nostalgia Goggles

- Obsidian Members Group

- NoSurf

- LeatherCraft

- Productivity

Twitter spaces. If you’re into stock trading I’ve found some very smart people talking about Macro economics deep into the night. It’s the first time I felt excitement for internet in a long long time. You can be a fly on the wall or request to speak at any time. Need to find the right spaces though.
Could you recommend some spaces?
I run "office hours" to chat/rant/exchange ideas/pair program. Come and say hi!

Oh this is awesome, I'll definitely schedule a chat for next week! What a neat idea! I do this informally for a small network of junior devs now but I like how you've extended to total strangers.
Matrix is the place. It's FOSS. It works pretty decent. There are people there.

Here; join guix: https://matrix.to/#/#guix-space:matrix.org

Anyone out there know if there is a lisp space? It would be cool to have a huge one with all the lisp related channels.

Definitely Mastodon, you can find some instances on https://joinmastodon.org , there is an instance for nearly everything that could be of interest to you, but you are not restricted to your "interest bubble" where your account is and can browse/interact with all instances (except those that are blocked by the instance you chose).
